It’s no surprise that many tasks performed by the workforce today are predicted to soon be obsolete. In an increasingly digitized, artificially-intelligent world, it’s becoming easier and easier to replace human labor with technology that’s developing at an exponential rate. Even now, it’s estimated that about half the tasks people are paid to complete could be automated with technology that already exists — amounting to $15 trillion in wages.

Although alarming, these numbers by no means suggest an end to jobs. Instead, they spotlight the urgent demand for a shift in the skills we cultivate as a society. This unmet demand has already impacted the global job market for the past several years and its effects will continue to amplify. Success in academia, the workforce, and the global economy all depend on an enhanced focus on what makes us uniquely human: soft skills.
